Federal Energy Tax Credit
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Tax Act includes tax credit incentives up to $1500 for homeowners that make energy-efficient home improvements, including qualifying windows and doors. Tax credits are great because, unlike tax deductions, they go straight to the bottom line!
To qualify for the tax credit, windows and doors purchased must meet certain requirements. Both the SHGC and U-Factor ratings must be .30 or less. SHGC is short for Solar Heat Gain Coefficient and represents the amount of radiated heat (like sunshine) that gets through the window from the outside. Lower numbers are better. U-Factor refers to how much insulation the product provides and lower numbers are better here as well.
You can see these ratings by looking for a sticker on the product like those at the left of this page. Also, we provide a document certifying that our products meet these standards. You should keep a copy with your tax records.
Your tax credit will be 30% of the purchase price of the qualifying doors and windows, up to a maximum of $1500. Note that the credit will be applied to the tax year in which you purchased the windows and doors. It applies only to the purchase price of the products, not installation or other fees or taxes.
